Calgary → Kuching

17 Jun 2016

This was the routing home: YYC-SFO-HKG-SIN-KUL-KCH. Last sector was due to cancellation of our SIN-KCH flight. No reason was given whatsoever for the cancellation.

Our long way home began with YYC-SFO on United's Embraer RJ-175 First Class:

Food on board was forgettable, dozed off most of the flight with my trusty Bose QC20. Had a bit of a panic when we circled for 30 minutes upon reaching SFO without landing with significant turbulence and no announcement from the pilot. Landed around 10PM.

Quickly made my way to Cathay Pacific's excellent lounge (for US standards) at SFO for a quick bite:

You can read Lucky's review of the newly expanded lounge for a comprehensive report. Next order of business: a shower and change of clothes in preparation for our SFO-HKG flight. Really liked the bath amenities, marble finish and spacious design:

There was a slight delay during boarding but we were informed by the lounge staff so waited it out in the comforts of by now an empty lounge. Boarding commenced shortly and we made our way to the gate, among the last J passengers to board by the looks of it.

We managed to snag two seats in the mini-business cabin just behind First Class so that meant added privacy and a sense of calm and quiet.

 Seat 11D

CX's reverse herringbone seats remain one of my favourite J seats: IFE is good, noise cancellation headphones work, plenty of storage space and a great lie-flat bed which does not require FAs to help convert into bed mode. Only con (and it's a big one): no wifi.

I managed 6 hours of sleep on the 14h 10m flight. Time went by quickly enough. Meals were normal fare, nothing memorable (therefore no pics) and I watched a few movies and TED talks.

Landed around 7AM in HKG. Before long I was having my shower at the Bridge and freshening up:

Had some dim sums and a coffee before boarding our HKG-SIN flight.

I continued reading Elon Musk's autobiography (bought in Calgary before our departure) and managed to finish it on this flight. Mind-blowing and inspirational tale. My next car will be a Tesla.

Two laksas later, the first in SIN's dnata Lounge and the second at MH's Golden Lounge in KUL, and we were finally home.
